VC Catalyst

Do I need any prior knowledge or experience to complete the course?

This is an introductory program and you don’t need any background in venture capital or investing to take part. We welcome participants from a wide range of backgrounds, however, we do recommend that participants have an understanding of financial literacy and investing fundamentals – for example, being comfortable with concepts such as revenue, profit, valuation, and equity. This will help you get the most out of the course material and applied exercises.

Alumni often start with curiosity and some imposter syndrome – but leave with confidence, networks, and practical tools to start investing.

Who is VC Catalyst for?

The program is designed for a range of active and aspiring investors, including:

  • Investment Advisers
  • Angel investors (current or potential)
  • Family office managers
  • Corporate venture teams
  • Emerging or future venture fund managers
  • Professionals curious about backing startups
  • Future Venture Capital LPs
What will I gain from the program?
  • A clear understanding of how venture capital works (without the jargon)
  • Best-practice tools to evaluate deals and build an investment thesis
  • Access to world-class facilitators and guest speakers
  • Connection to active VC and angel investors nationally and internationally
  • A strong peer network of investors to collaborate and co-invest with
What do alumni say about their experience?

Alumni highlight three big wins:

  • Confidence: “I now have the confidence to take opportunities and back ventures with clarity.”  – Davi La Ferla
  • Network: “Every deal I’ve done includes members from the program as co-investors.”  – Davi La Ferla
  • Career impact: “It helped me pursue my interest in the venture space through my role at a venture studio.”  – Hilary Watson

“VC Catalyst gave me the clarity, confidence, and connections to move forward. I’m excited by the opportunities it’s opened up, and by what’s still to come.” – James Drew

How can I start investing after the program?

There are many practical entry points – big and small. Alumni often take their first steps by:

  • Joining an angel syndicate or network – a group of investors who pool resources to back startups together. This helps you learn alongside others and share the risk.
  • Co-investing with peers – many participants continue collaborating and co-investing with fellow alumni.
  • Backing startups directly – if you have a clear thesis, you can start with small direct investments in founders and sectors you believe in.
  • Exploring corporate ventures or fund opportunities – some alumni apply their skills within corporate ventures or corporate funds before building their own portfolios.
  • Staying active in the ecosystem – attending demo days, mentoring founders, and keeping connected with the VC Catalyst community.
What’s the class size?

Each cohort has ~25 participants – small enough for meaningful discussion, but diverse enough for rich perspectives.

What if I can’t attend every session?

You’ll receive detailed class materials for any missed sessions. That said, the real magic comes from the conversations and collaboration, so we strongly encourage attending live where possible. Active participation builds a strong and dynamic cohort experience, and this ehances the opportunity of learning from your peers.

How are participants selected?

We look for suitability, diversity, and a commitment to actively engage. Applications are reviewed carefully to ensure each cohort brings a mix of experiences and perspectives.

What’s the best advice from alumni?
  • “Clear your diary and lean in fully.”  – Davi La Ferla
  • “You get out what you put in – make the time.”  – Hilary Watson
  • And remember: If you understand how venture works, you understand how innovation works.
Do I need a big investment portfolio to apply?

No. You don’t need deep pockets to get started. What matters most is your mindset, curiosity, and readiness to learn and contribute.
