Aashay Shah’s journey into venture capital and AgTech investment has been anything but conventional. With a diverse career spanning institutional banking at Westpac New Zealand and a role as a Deals Manager in a fintech startup, Aashay has honed his skills across both structured finance and the high-risk, high-reward world of startups.
While managing deals in fintech, he was responsible for increasing revenue and attracting new capital, exposing him to the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of startup ecosystems – a stark contrast to the stability of banking.
This role ignited Aashay’s passion for startup investing, particularly its potential to create meaningful, long-term impact. Motivated by the desire to leave a better world for future generations, he transitioned into AgTech, a field at the intersection of sustainability, innovation, and economic growth.
Aashay now works at AgriZeroNZ, a pioneering public-private partnership supporting farmers in reducing emissions while maintaining productivity and profitability. The organisation is committed to driving sustainable agricultural practices, positioning New Zealand as a leader in climate-resilient farming.
‘I’ve always hated wasting food,’ Aashay reflected. ‘AgriZeroNZ allows me to combine my financial expertise with making a real impact in the fight against climate change, with protecting profitability for the farmers.’
This alignment of personal values with professional expertise fuels Aashay’s work, where he plays a critical role in supporting innovative solutions to address some of agriculture’s biggest challenges.
Learning through VC Catalyst
Seeking to deepen his understanding of venture capital and strengthen his connections within the ecosystem, Aashay undertook Wade Institute’s VC Catalyst programme. The programme provided a comprehensive view of venture capital investing, blending theoretical learning with practical applications.
The program’s structure suited his hands-on learning style, enabling him to apply theoretical concepts in practical contexts. Aashay appreciated the remote delivery of the program intensive for fostering connections with global peers, noting:
‘The two weeks were full-on and required a lot of time, so I would recommend this for individuals who are committed to their personal development.’
The programme’s remote delivery also facilitated global connections, enabling him to engage with peers and industry experts from around the world.
Aashay particularly valued the programme’s focus on pre-reading and reflective learning, which allowed him to recalibrate his perspective through thoughtful class discussions. These interactions helped him explore new approaches to startup investing, with a key insight being the importance of founder empathy.
Building empathy and structuring deals
Aashay’s experience at VC Catalyst reinforced the critical role of understanding a founder’s vision in venture capital. ‘Great startups are on the verge of brilliant and crazy, so you need to be able to structure risks and back the founders to deliver on their vision,’ he explained. He learned to assess risks thoughtfully, identifying low-value risks that could be managed through business-as-usual processes while focusing on enabling founders to succeed.
This mindset aligns perfectly with Aashay’s role at AgriZeroNZ, where he is committed to fostering equitable and impactful partnerships. He is applying his learnings to construct deals that balance startup growth with financial sustainability, aiming to drive success in the agribusiness space.
Aashay’s vision for AgTech
For Aashay, the future of AgTech represents a powerful opportunity to transform global food systems while addressing pressing environmental challenges. At AgriZeroNZ, he is helping to create a more sustainable agricultural industry, one that not only reduces farm emissions and safeguards sector profitability and enhances food security.
Reflecting on his journey, Aashay credits VC Catalyst with equipping him with the skills, connections, and perspective to excel in AgTech investment:
‘The connections I have made with VC Catalyst are truly amazing and already paying great dividends,’ he said.
As he continues to make strides in his career, Aashay is committed to leveraging his expertise and vision to drive meaningful change in the AgTech sector, ensuring a resilient future for both people and the planet.
